Liner Notes (March 13th, 2021)
This week’s newsletter looks at music and entertainment I liked this week and has some extra commentary on a few other things I discovered over the past seven days. As always, there’s also a playlist of ten songs I think are worth your time, and this week’s supporter Q&A post can be found here.
Two Things
This was a weird week. I felt more busy than usual and have been looking forward to this weekend and a chance to just sit on my ass a little and relax. I currently have on a spring training baseball game, am lounging on the couch and writing this on the iPad. Not a bad start to the weekend. This week’s discoveries include a fun little dice game called Qwixx. We’ve been looking for games for two to pass the time, and this is really easy to learn and has been pretty fun in our couple of nights playing it.
No one told me that there was a comic book series that picks up where the Batman: The Animated Series ended. It’s called The Adventures Continue, and I read one issue, and it looks like a giant warm nostalgia blanket. If all goes as planned, I’m going to spend the afternoon reading all of this.

American Thrills have released their new single “Discount Casket.” Check it out on Spotify.
This is the first track off of their upcoming sophomore EP, Old Things, which will be released on April 16th via New School Records (No Trigger/Twenty2) and Cat’s Claw Records (Bracket/Houseghost). The record will have a limited vinyl and cassette run and was recorded with Chris Teti (TWIABP/Hostage Calm).
In Case You Missed It
Music Thoughts
This MxPx vinyl boxset is getting a stern look from me. I don’t own any of their albums on wax, and it feels like I should—such a formative band for me and such a solid collection of songs here. The price is a little steep, but it’s being released the day after my birthday, and I may just have to treat myself. I’ll at least check out the site in the morning to see if it’s sold out or not.
I’ve been enjoying the new Against the Current songs. I like the energy and pop-punk feel. Give me an entire album of stuff like this, and I’ll play the shit out of it.
This Wild Life and Remember Sports also released tracks worth a spin this week.
I tossed on the new Paper Kites album yesterday as the day was ending, and it hit just right. The perfect mood album.
Selena Gomez’s new Spanish language EP was a fun listen. I was doing other stuff while it was on, so I was only able to half pay attention, but it actually worked pretty well as something to have on in the background as well.
Next up, I plan to go give the new Harmony Woods a listen. I’ve heard good things.
Entertainment Thoughts
After a long week, we wanted something exceptionally silly where we didn’t need to think for our weekly Friday movie. Venom fit the bill nicely. It is so ridiculous, and yet I remain convinced it’s secretly good. I can’t believe I’ve now seen this stupid movie twice and enjoyed the hell out of it both times.
Pixie felt like a not as good Guy Ritchie flick. It’s not bad, but nothing remarkable.
I was impressed and happy with the first season of Wandavision. It was well done and a fun watch that flirted with greatness and instead ended up just being a solid television show that works as an entry into the Marvel world on television. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to watch the Marvel TV shows, but this convinced me. Disney+ is looking more and more like a real win.
On the Apple TV+ side of things, the second season of Dickinson picked up where the last left off as being entertaining and fun. If you can accept the premise and the modern spin, it’s the perfect kind of late-night show.
Three episodes in, and dare I say, I am really into Superman and Lois. It’s well done and something I am actively looking forward to watching each week. I haven’t had a show that I choose to watch on a weekly basis, just by myself, in quite a long time. It’s fun.
We gave the first episode of The Head a watch, and this looks like the next miniseries we’ll be doing. Murder mystery in Antarctica? Sign me up.
Random and Personal Stuff
Not a whole lot this week. I’ve got to take one of the cats in for his yearly check-up at the vet, and I plan to walk around a little outside since it looks so nice out right now. Sunny, hovering around 60 degrees, and I haven’t spent much time in the past few months outdoors. I’m ready for spring and summer and being able to spend a day out on the balcony or patio reading in the sun.
Ten Songs
